There's a white noise type of sound in the background in an interview I recorded on my DSLR, I want to keep the interview content itself but really want to remove that white noise, how can I do that in iMovie?

Not sure how well this works. However, try selecting the audio clip in the timeline. Then click on the Noise Reduction and Equalizer button in the tool bar in the upper right of the screen. Then put a check in the box to the left that says "Reduce Background Noise".

If Rich's suggestion doesn't work you could try the noise reduction filter in the excellent FREE app Audacity.
