are my messages from icloud downloading to my iphone

are my messages downloading? i have about 8.2gb of messages on icloud but they were not syncing correctly to my iphone, so i decided to click on disable and delete as it says that it will download the messages from icloud onto the iphone, my worry is that there is no indication if anything is downloading and the icloud storage already says 0kb, so my question is are my messages downloading? how long does it take?
