How can I change formatting in Mail for quoted emails?

I am encountering a problem where quoted emails get truncated to a finite width in the rendering of a message in Mail. This causes a problem because Mail indents each earlier level of a long chain of replies, such that the earliest messages are literally rendered one letter per line, making them totally unreadable. To fix this, there should be a way to either turn off indenting OR (better!) allow the rendering to override whatever fixed line length the original message had to simply allow all quoted material to fill out the entire width of the window in which the message is displayed. I am attaching an example. Any suggestions welcome!

These are long chains of emails that get "replied to" by many people along the chain - including myself - for many rounds. I have my setting at "Quote text of the original message", which simply shifts every message within the chain up one "quotation level" whenever I respond - and I suspect, others do the same. I guess I could try changing my own setting NOT to "Increase quote level", which is inconvenient when trying to decipher who replied what. It would be much better if there weren't a hard cut-off on the RIGHT side of the paragraph in quoted email...
