is the password to get into your iMac the same as an admin password?
I am trying to update my Mac and it is asking for an admin password and I thought it would be the same password to open my Mac

It is, normally, and if you are the only user of that Mac then your User Account should have Admin privileges.
Are there any other users of that Mac, or was it previously owned or administered by someone else? If so one of them may have Admin privileges.
