The 2017 MacBook Air does not have a USB-C port, so you can't use USB-C to make a single-cable connection to the monitor that would carry power, USB data, and video.
Your MacBook Air has a Thunderbolt 2 port with a Mini DisplayPort connector. That port can double as a Mini DisplayPort. MacTracker says that it can drive external monitors with a resolution of up to 3840x2160 pixels.
The Dell U2722DE is a 27" 2560x1440 monitor with USB-C, DisplayPort, and HDMI inputs.

In your case, I would recommend a Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort connection. Dell includes a cable in the box that has full-size DisplayPort plugs on both ends. You could use that cable in connection with a mDP-to-DP adapter, or you could get a Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable.

If you want to use the downstream USB ports on the Dell monitor, you will also need to make a USB connection from your Air to the USB-C upstream (data only) port on the monitor. For that, I believe you can use some form of USB-A to USB-C adapter, maybe even the cable that comes in the Dell monitor box.
You may want to refer to the illustration of the ports on the monitor (on Dell's site) when connecting the monitor, so that you don't accidentally choose the wrong port when there are two ports with the same type of connector which perform different functions.
