How to Split Screen for Notes on IPad

Sometimes you can start a day with almost nothing to do, when suddenly one tiny thing comes along that grows into a thousand things you’re dealing with. It happens so fast it can give you whiplash. My issue started out as an Amazon Kindle issue, which evolved quickly to become an iPad Pro issue with Notes. Long story short, I wanted to write a book review to post on Goodreads in order to upload and post all 68 notes I wrote in the non-fiction book I just finished reading. I just want to share my notes that could be helpful to others in interpreting some of the old fashioned words used by the author and some of the Sanskrit words and phrases. Unfortunately, the formatting in this particular book isn’t set up for sharing notes as it should be. So I decided to go ahead and write a review of the book, because according to Goodreads I should be able to upload my notes to their website (which I saved on my Kindle email). Easy peasy, right? Unfortunately, nothing I do is easy. Just ask my husband. I’m ready to write the review and I have a note in Notes with how to do an outline, etc, to keep me going on task. Now I want to open a new note and put the “outline” notes next to and side by side to the review I’m going to write. I researched whether Notes is capable of doing split screen in Notes, and sure enough, I found two posts through Google that are right here on Apple Discussions. The problem is, however, that the option in the Notes menu for split screen doesn’t show up like as I have read in the post from March 2022. There are one of two symbols that should come up, however you decide to open it, but I see neither. Now I’m wondering if split screen option took a hike with my memojis which disappeared after the iOS 17 update. I suppose it’s possible that split screen in Notes is only temporarily gone on vacation with Memojis. Maybe they’ll be back in another update. I’m up to iOS 17.0.3. If they come back, I wonder how long I’ll have to wait? Or perhaps I should just get an old fashioned sheet of paper and pencil and write my notes by hand. No waiting.

I frequently have a hard time figuring out how certain things work when I’m doing research. So if the writer doesn’t include pictures in their article, it takes me longer to cogitate and figure it out. I’m a visual learner. So I could have missed something. Also perhaps Apple removed Note’s ability to split screen, who knows? With old articles and forum questions piling up out in LaLa Land, it has become much more difficult to sift through research and find a solution to a problem. If anyone can help with this problem, I would be grateful. However, don’t write to me just to be a wiseass and try to make me feel stupid. I don’t take kindly to that. We are all in this world/life together and I don’t believe it’s asking too much to use your best good judgment when writing back to someone. I thank you kindly.

P.S. I must have missed the tutorial on subjects for this forum because I couldn’t find “Notes” as a subject. Go figure.

I confess I became lost in your explanation. Perhaps you have an iPad model that supports Stage Manager - and you have activated this mode.

Split Screen and Slide-over views are not available when you have activated Stage Manager. With Stage Manager active, you will instead have the windowed view that you see.

You can disable Stage Manager - and return to Split and Slide-over views, from iPad settings. For iPadOS17:

Settings > Multitasking & Gestures > [Multitasking] - select Split View & Slide Over

For iPadOS16, the path is slightly different:

Settings > Home Screen & Multitasking > Stage Manager > Use Stage Manager on iPad - set to OFF

Note that you can also easily enable/disable Stage Manager from the Control Centre (after adding the corresponding control to the Control Centre panel):
