What is the “Not Mounted” disk?
Have a look at the pic. I have a USB SSD with a few partitions on it and see this “not mounted” volume. Any idea as to what it is and how to remove it?
Thanks

Ok, thanks. The following support article may come in handy then:

Thanks and no as I can not select that particular one.
With APFS formatting, a Container is what was called a partition in HFS+. A physical drive can have one or more containers. Within any container you can have one or more volumes ... similar to HFS+.
So to get clarity, is this external drive formatted as:
A better "view" would be to use the following command in the Terminal app: diskutil list external

Nothing to be sorry about. Just wanted to make sure I know how your drives are formatted. While I get a chance to dig into this, what version of macOS is your Mac running?
The only physical external drive I see here is disk8. I am assuming that this is NOT the USB SSD you are referring to ... correct? The others appear to be images. Not exactly sure what you did here.
... and are you only interested in what is going on with the disk7's Container as per your images provided?
Presently OS12 on a MBP.
It is an external USB SSD. It has OS backups of different Mac machines on it (made with ChronoSync) and some other titbits. And yes only the small bit on the disk7's Container
Ok, that explains the numerous volumes on the synthesized disk9, on the physical, external disk8.
I am familiar with ChronoSync, by name only, and have no personal experience with using it or how it works with drives. As such, I'm afraid that I can't answer your original question about disk7.
Maybe someone else here, with ChronoSync, will chime in to assist you with this.

Ok, then having the output of the diskutil command would be helpful to better understand how this drive if formatted.
is this what you mean?
Sorry, but no. I was suggesting that you enter that diskutil command in the Terminal app.
The result should look something like the following image. Again the command is: diskutil list external
Sorry. Here you go.
Thanks for answering
A single container with multiple volumes
Ok, then having the output of the diskutil command would be helpful to better understand how this drive if formatted.
Thanks.
