iPad OS File size

Having a real nightmare with storage space on my iPad since iOS17.

My device has 32GB of space overall and since updating to 17.0.1, 12.25GB is taken up by the OS, and 6.94GB as system data - that’s over half of my overall storage.

Now trying to update to 17.0.2 and despite off-loading nigh on all of my installed apps, I still don’t have enough space to install it. I’ve cleared Safari cookies, photos all go to iCloud with HD versions not stored locally. I’m not sure what else I can do to make space.

Is the OS supposed to take up this amount of space? It seems a crazy amount and didn’t seem to be a problem with iOS16.

Thanks for any help.

System storage includes a lot of cached data. iPadOS16/17 appears to make more use of available storage for temporary system caches. iPad models with only 32GB of local storage are always going to be a challenge if you are attempting to save data on the iPad.

It is generally recommended that you maintain 4-6GB of free space at all times - as your iPad needs some temporary space to complete some tasks - such as performing system software updates.

A system software update requires sufficient space to be downloaded, unpacked and verified prior to installation - major version updates (such as updating from iPadOS 16.x to iPadOS 17) requiring considerably more space than an incremental point-update. After the update is successfully completed, temporary files are automatically deleted - returning free space.

If your internal storage is full, or is insufficient for the task that you need to perform, your only option is to better manage the storage that you have - and delete unused Apps or unneeded data.

“Offloading” Apps can be a helpful method of creating temporary space for a software update.

External storage options can often help with managing limited internal storage. Depending upon your iPad model, the iPad will either have a Lightning or USB-C port - and may therefore require either an Adapter or USB hub to connect the USB Storage device. If your iPad has a Lightning port, you’ll need an Apple Lightning to USB3 Camera Adapter:
