Messenger app on iPhone 12 shows a new message and there isn't one.
I tried shutting down app and turning off phone. Didn't work.

If Messages, follow this guidance to read through all your texts in this app: View and respond to notifications on iPhone - Apple Support. Bear in mind, an unread message may not always be at the top of the list, so check older messages too.
