Confirm Mac password not working on iMac desktop after login password was changed

I changed the login password on my IMac desktop computer and I am now getting the message to confirm Mac password. When I click on continue the computer just sets there until a message pops up asking for my Apple ID. I enter that and I then get a message saying there was an error connecting to the Apple ID server. Help please as I am dead in the water.

iMac 27″, macOS 14.0

Start with this...

Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode? Could take 10 minutes or more.

Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches & loads safe Drivers, & prevents loading of 3rd party extensions, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.
