Same here, after 2h of YouTube, little FaceTime & some browsing on bright balcony, the phone was down to 35% and quite hot (no direct sun). It even started to reduce brightness after 90 min, so that the experience was not perfect anymore.
So far I am between really unimpressed and unhappy about the performance of the 15 Pro Max..
I have exactly the same issue, the update did nothing to help fix the issue, I’m seriously considering asking for refund, I didn’t pay this much money to get such unpleasant experience
Same here, 5 photos or 1 min of browsing the iphone got hot, last time I measure 42ºX
Hey!
If you have just bought a new phone, it ISN’T overheating, unless you get a screen popup that says you have to wait for the temperature to cool down.
When purchasing a new phone, the phone indexes all the new data you have put on the phone. (Meaning, it is scanning your emails, photos, and almost everything on your phone, so that when you search for something, it is more accurate.) In almost all cases, this is a normal occurrence and not something you should worry about.
However, if this IS NOT a new phone, you can try some of the tips listed below by other users:

This overheating can also be caused by a nearly-full storage. If that is the case, free some storage!

If your phone feels considerably hot and reduces the screen brightness, what do you make out of it?
I charged from 35% to 72% and was working on my Mac just listening to Spotify via iPhone and in less than 3h, the phone went down to 32% again. Shocker.
The phone still feels warmer than normal, with very little activities. Very disappointing.
It is new . I have always had the premium apple phone and have never had this issue when new . I was just on a phone call and it became too hot to hold against my face . I am old so don’t use things like you tube and instagram ! It’s been 2 weeks now , surely everything is now backed up onto it .also , I have tons of storage
Same issues with the warm, just 1 minute call and get too hot is impossible to talk, 42º C in ma face is too hot
I have the 15 pro max and my experience has been slightly different. The only time my phone overheats is when I’m playing Pokémon go and the sun is out, worse from noon to about 4-5pm. It’s fine in the early morning and at night; even when I’m using it while hotspotting another phone. But, if it’s real suny and above 70 degrees, it gets hot real quick.
haven’t experienced any overheating issues otherwise. It’s never turned off on its own, sent texts/made a call by accident, gotten too hot while in use when I’m home. Prior to this phone, I had the 13 pro max and never had it overheat once. Not in any instance like I described above or while using my hotspot.
That what we are all getting. I was charging. Says charging paused due to temp. I’ve had this phone for 3 hours. Just xferd my data from my 12 pro max and it overheated. 17.3
same here
i update to 17.0.3 i still facing overheating issue when i used camera and take 3,5 picture on my 15pro max
Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max. After the update came out seemed to be doing fine. Today the overheating started again. Happened in the car just surfing the web. No sunlight and was stopped, not connected to Bluetooth. At home, had connected to screen mirroring, which I do a lot, and started getting hot. Do t know what’s going on. I have a 1TB phone and have over 600 GB of free space. Have not downloaded anything or changed recently. This is frustrating. Definitely was thinking about a MacBook, not now. Apple is too expensive to have issues like this.
I'm on 17.0.3 - IPhone 15 pro max. heats up when using camera. just after a few snaps of selfies and rear camera usage. I noticed that my phone heats up. it won't even let me use a flash. since iphone needs to cooldown
same thing happens to my phone. prior to 17.0.3 I don't have the overheating issue
I’m not even using apps that I would expect to require a lot, NYTimes and Wikipedia at the moment, and my phone gets so hot it is uncomfortable to touch. This happens all the time! Will Apple give me a full refund? I honestly don’t know if I still want this thing. The camera is great but I’m not sure it is worth it.
