Safari opening new tab when searching in Google - malware, and how to get rid of it?

A few weeks ago Safari started opening a new tab every time I do a search in Google. Sometimes even from within a website. It's opened games websites, Yahoo search results, etc. The appearance of this malware seems to have coincided with the time when I allowed javascript to run on my MacBook Pro to download pdf versions of magazines published as issuu files. I've looked in Preferences and cannot obviously see any software or extension that could cause this issue. Any suggestions and solutions gratefully received.

  • Verify that there are no Extensions installed at Safari > Settings > Extensions
  • Run the free version of MalwareBytes. Only the free scan is needed and there is no need to subscribe to constant monitoring. https://www.malwarebytes.com
  • Check out the John Galt article and post the screen shots suggested.

MalwareBytes will remove the most common Malware problems automatically when downloading the free scan, but you can skip to the last point and post the screen shots from the Support Article by John Galt. We will then be able to tell you what files you need to remove from those locations and it will eliminate the problem.
