Since iOS 17 iPhone 12 Pro turning itself on while charging

Every night I do what I have done for years, placing my iPhone 12 Pro on its MagSafe charger, then turning it off. In the past, the phone would remain powered off until I powered it on the next morning.

Since upgrading to iOS 17.0.3 from the latest version of iOS 16, my phone now spontaneously turns itself on in the middle of the night, announcing itself with a loud *ding* and a lit up screen. Awakened much earlier than I like, I power it down without taking it off the charger, and a few hours later the same thing happens.

(To be very clear, this is not a case of placing a powered down phone on the charger and then it powers on. I know that is normal.)

Any ideas why iOS 17 is causing this and what I can do to stop it? Not looking for a suggestion that involves “Why not just leave your phone on all night in Do Not Disturb mode”. I like my phone completely off at night.
