I rang up apple support and they told me there has literally been a new update for Sonoma, you need to physically update the software as it doesn't prompt you. Failing that you can still use ⌘ F (Command, Find) whilst in numbers and it will work that way or use the Edit menu and find.
When I open numbers at some stage I get asked 'Modifications aren't in sync. Choose which version to keep.' When I choose a version and I've choose both in the past, the find and replace box freezes. Any help please?

When you say all fields do you mean that you cannot type anything in the Search and Replace boxes, or only that the buttons stay grey and inoperable? In the latter scenario it's because it doesn't find any match for what you search.
No definitive answer other than another app is causing it, I booted in safe mode with a new Log In ID and it worked. Not very helpful though as there's no way to pinpoint which app it is without further assistance.
I have 14.2.1 (23C71), and this still is not completely fixed. I can search for "FALSE" in my case, select search and replace, put "0" and then move around between them using the arrow buttons in the bottom right, but hitting "Replace All" does nothing. Even "Replace & Find" does nothing.
This is literally absurd. Is this abandonware? I have a deadline, and I'm spending hours on my Sunday trying to fix this. I have no choice but to tab through EVERY one of these and change them myself, hopefully not making a mistake. This amongst many other things is absolutely absurd. This should be Apple easy to use software, not an even worse version of the monstrosities that are already out there. Can no one make a simple spreadsheet for basic human beings?

It's understandable that you feel frustrated. But I hope you realize we are your fellow users here. Most of us cannot replicate what you describe. It appears to be something related to the hardware and software configurations of some users.
You might consider giving feedback to Apple via Numbers > Provide Numbers Feedback in your menu.

No the issue I have is in the actual find box, it's grey and I can't type or search for anything?
Same issue here after last update, box is greyed out, can't search for anything.
The issue is not resolved. I am in Sonoma, and fully up to date, yet have the same issue of a fully greyed out find and replace box.
Unable to type anything into the search box
I think I see the problem. I didn't have the column selected as I thought I did. Working now. Thanks for your help.
I have the same issue Find opens, but the box is gray and I cannot type in.
Is anybody able to address this. I too have this problem and it has been ongoing. Selecting a column or text does not work. Help appreciated please.
I can’t type anything in the box
