Reversed Volume Buttons

Today, I got the new iOS 17 update on my iPad. It’s good and all but when I went to turn down the volume, I was confused with the buttons. Before I got the update, the button on the right turned the volume up, and the one on the left turned it down. After I got this new update, my button on the right turned down the volume and the one on the left turned it up. I’ve done my research on trying to fix this, many people have said to go to settings and toggle the “Fixed Position Volume Controls”. But when I went to settings, it wasn’t there. Is there any way I can fix this? This has been bugging me since the morning.

If you need to know, my iPad is an iPad Air 5th Generation.

iPad Air, iPadOS 17

I’m typing on an Air 5 and I also don’t see this option. All it takes is one patch to fix this. My Pro 4 has this option, why not my Air 5?

There have been multiple reports of Dynamic Volume Controls not working, or unexpectedly reversed, after updating to iPadOS 17.x

For those affected by this bug, check that Full Keyboard Access has been disabled in iPad settings:

Settings > Accessibility > Keyboards > Full Keyboard Access > Full Keyboard Access - set to OFF

If this setting is already set to OFF, it may be necessary to reset this setting from OFF to ON - and then back to OFF.

Dynamic volume controls were introduced with release of iPadOS 15.4 onwards. The “logic” behind dynamic volume controls is such that regardless of the screen orientation, the relative function remains constant - as follows:

  • When the physical buttons are positioned on a vertical edge of the iPad, the uppermost button will always increase the volume. Conversely, lower button will decrease the volume.

  • When the physical buttons are positioned on a horizontal edge of then iPad, the button on the right will increase the volume - while the button on the left will decrease the volume.

For reasons known only to Apple, the ability to disable this feature is not available for any new models of iPad and iPad Pro that have since been launched - these models being:

  • iPad Air5
  • iPad mini6
  • fourth generation iPad Pro 11”
  • sixth generation iPad Pro 12.9”
  • iPad10

This is documented within this recently updated Apple Support document:

I found this post from last year which indicates that option isn't available for the iPad Air 5th generation and the iPad Mini 6.

I don’t have button Fixed Position Volume… - Apple Community

I have a Mini 6 and still forget which button does what. It should be like this, though:

The button on the left OR facing down lowers the volume.

The button on the right OR facing up increases the volume.
