M-audio Fast Track Pro compatibility on systems that have no supported drivers

Maybe you have one of those lying around, recently plugged it into your mac but something unexpected happened (no sound, static instead of sound or your whole system hangs when trying to play a sound) and you're looking for a fix. If that sounds familiar, keep reading.

This is an ancient but still good audio interface and it deserves better than ending up in the bin, especially as it's most likely still funcitonnal. You probably tried to troubleshoot the issue online, tried to download the driver from Avid website but realized that the last time is was updated was many years ago and it won't install on your current sytem.

The thing is that it does not actually need any drivers, MacOs already has all it needs to make this thing work, and the actual reason it does not is likely because your old driver is still installed but incompatible with your curent system. If like me, every time you get a new mac to replace an old one, you import your existing time machine backup, you're bringing with it old drivers that most of the time still work fine, but once in a while create a situation like this.

As the driver installer does not work, the uninstaller does not work either so how do your remove it? Easy, from the Finder, select from the top menu Go > Go to Folder and paste "/Library/Extensions/" (sometimes it will be in "/System/Library/Extensions").

From there look for a file named "M-AudioFastTrackPro.kext", delete it and restart. Done!
