How To Turn Off Blue Caps Indicator On-screen Icon

In MacOS Sonoma there has started to appear a blue caps indicator when typing and moving the cursor if caps lock is on.

This is very annoying for those who need caps to be on for extended periods of time or who find caps more convenient when typing something long in all uppercase. For example when writing SQL queries, its convention to the syntax, or when typing long constance in various programming languages.

This blue indicator is very annoying that it obscures the text of the line below. I cannot find anywhere to turn it off permanently. Pressing ESC will hide it temporarily so that I can see the text it was obscuring, however in some applications (including Safari) the pressing of ESC will simultaneously exit the maximised mode.

This blue indicator also appears when turning off caps lock that it will display your input language for example “A” for English.

Below are some screenshot example of when this is covering the text I'm trying to read and I hope this can illustrate how it is very frustrating to work with this pointless overlay.

There is no means to disable it unless Apple removes this feature in a future macOS Sonoma update. Until then, use the shift key to promote capital letters as needed. This still does not address the accidental Caps Lock from sliding off the A key.

I suggest that you send direct feedback to the macOS product team reminding them that productive people do not need childish distractions that interfere with their work flow.

This is the exact same problem I'm having right now. Not to mention, when I need to keep my computer in caps lock for an extended period of time, I keep on accidentally turning it off when I have to click in the space it's currently occupying. It's very annoying and I hope Apple fixes this problem or at least gives us an option to disable it in System Preferences in the next OS update. I've already given my feedback using the link someone else replied to the macOS product team.

THANK YOU Jefforganist

I was able to stumble through your instructions and it worked for me.

I do CAD drafting and the caps lock key is a necessary tool. I have struggled with that blue symbol, it actually prevents the cursor from selecting things and requires a lot of redoing and frustration when you cannot get past the symbol to what's underneath it. I have been looking for a solution to it for months.

Apple should get rid of this thing or allow users a simple way to turn it off.

Hi jefforganist,

i try your fix, and it gets rid of the flags, but i causes my Mac to get very laggy now and then when i play games. I did a full clean reinstall and tested your fix again and same thing happened. After applying your fix and reboot my Mac has these super random lags when i move and click my mouse courser.

Do you have a way to undo this fix?

I have precisely this same problem. The terminal command got rid of the blue icon (amazing), but now my idle CPU time with nothing else going on went from 6-10% to 40-60% (not amazing).

I noticed Activity Monitor was reporting the com.AppleUserHIDDrivers process was using over 200% of the CPU (how?!). I force quit the process in the Activity Monitor, waited a minute or two for it to restart and things seem to have settled down a bit. Not sure if it's a one-time fix or if I'll have to keep doing it.
