How to prevent image capture from preventing my scanner working

I downloaded the new MacOS Sonoma and my scanner stopped working as it defaults to image capture and says no scanner is selected.

I have reinstalled the scanner/printer twice and restarted the computer but it does not fix the problem.

I also seem to be unable to delete image capture.

Any ideas?

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 13.5

Okay, the LaserJet Pro M148dw printer downloads page does list a firmware update for that printer from May 2022, vendor drivers from February 2023, and the tech specs for that printer do list AirPrint support.

AirPrint is generally the way to go, but you will likely want that updated firmware.

Here is the AirPrint setup for macOS 13 Ventura: Print wirelessly from your Mac to your printer - Apple Support

If you get stuck, load the current firmware, maybe the current drivers (if not using AirPrint), and then reset the macOS printing system: Reset the printing system on your Mac to solve a problem - Apple Support

AirPrint supports scanning.

The HP Software does not download.

That would seem to be a website or download issue that HP might want to address, then.

The Problem is with the Sonoma OS

Printing to third-party printers and scanning via Apple support uses AirPrint.

For third-party printers with vendor-provided software, or for those vendors that do not support AirPrint scanning, or for vendor website issues, contact the vendor support organization.

More generally, I usually recommend Brother printers, and printing and scanning with AirPrint.

I have a Canon (newer model) All-in-One and I have the same problem. When I try to scan using my Canon, Image Capture takes over and I am unable to scan. AND ... I've tried to delete Image Capture but am not able to. Instructions say to right click and the delete OR drag to trash. There is no delete in the drop down menu and dragging to trash accomplishes exactly nothing!

It's definitely the Sonoma OS! Had no problems with scanning until the upgrade and I can still scan from my iMac which I have not upgraded to Sonoma OS.

The scanner works fine with earlier version of MacOS. I have 3 Macbooks and the only one that I upgraded to Sonoma has the problem. I am not alone.

I understand that HP has an issue but their support is terrible unless you pay a fee. Yet it is also an issue for Apple that they upgrade their OS and leave simple tasks unusable.

I do use Airprint by the way.

I run Brother printers, and have had no issues.

If you want to discuss some particular Canon printer, please post the model number.

If this is a model with AirPrint, that can provide a separate path that does not usually need vendor drivers.
