airtag not moving

I know there have been multiple questions but… I just got my AirTags recently and I added one as wallet for my daughter’s wallet- also for secondary me knowing her location- anyway, she went to this particular store, the tag keeps her location there. She went there yesterday and this morning, but is now at school (which her phone shows) but after 2 hours still showing at store, and updates time under Find My. She has her wallet.

Side note also can’t share- I was also in contact with Apple about this- couldn’t help.

iPhone 11, iOS 17

Just to be sure I understand. You placed the Apple AirTag inside her wallet ... correct? You are not referring to the Apple Wallet, that you would attach to an iPhone ... correct?

The AirTag relies on Bluetooth, not GPS. As such, it participates with the Apple Find My Network. That network is comprised of either your iPhone, or any other iPhone within the Bluetooth range of the AirTag. The tag's Bluetooth beacon sends out its location information once every 3-5 minutes. Should an iPhone nearby receive that beacon signal, AND that phone has a connection to the Internet, it will relay that to the Apple servers. This is where you would "see" it with the Find My app on your phone.

As you can see, all of these conditions may not be met simultaneously, and potentially why you are seeing what your getting.

As far as her sharing your AirTag, she must be 13 or older and with her own Apple ID.

Potentially, yes ... but as a potential "warning" that an AirTag is nearby. In addition, when an AirTag is separated from its host iPhone (the one you orginally paired it with), it will start beeping. This typically happens anywhere from 6 to 24 hrs after separation. You may have come across reading about a teacher, where the student had an AirTag in their backpack, placed by a concerned parent, is discovered because of the beeping.

The bottom line? The AirTag is designed to help recover a misplaced or lost item, not for tracking. If you are concerned that your daughter may misplace her wallet, she would be better off with her own AirTag ... assuming that she also has her own iPhone to pair it with.

Hello, yes her actual wallet. To clarify, are you saying that if an employee for example has iPhone and is connected to Bluetooth, etc, the tag would show with them? My phone is about 2 miles away from this store and her school is 2 blocks from there. She is almost 17, so no issues there for sharing. I guess what is frustrating then is if she lost her wallet at school, then the tag would be wrong. Thank you for responding.
