What does Chronod do?

On my 2018 MacBook Pro, just upgraded to Sonoma, I’m getting:

In the “firewall pane of Network Settings”, while I see a log of xxxxxd things (like launched, rapports, sharing, etc.) listed in Options, I don’t see “chronod”.

Clicking on the “?”, I get this from the MacOS User Guide:

“When another computer tries to connect to an app on your Mac over the network or internet, macOS displays an alert message. The app may be trying to allow other computers to connect with your Mac, or it may be sharing information with other computers.

Note: If no action is taken, the message remains displayed, and any attempts to connect to the app are denied.”

… which implies that “chronod” is an app. Although I can’t seem to find the app itself on my Mac, there is a folder of that name in:

[my user name] > Library > Group Containers > group.com.apple.chronod > chronod

… which implies that “chronod” is something in MacOS from Apple. There are two sub-folders along with what appears to be an SQL database:

chrono.sql

[folder] icons

[folder] remoteArchives

chrono.sql-shm

chrono.sql-wal

… which I have not attempted to delve into.

Any idea what “chrono” is, what it might do, and why I should (or shouldn’t) allow it to accept incoming network connections?

Do you use an iPhone?

chronod is in the default macOS, yes.

I see chronod associated with widgets...

Yes, I use an iPhone SE, recently updated to iOS 17.0.3.

On the Mac, in the chronid ... icons subfolder, I see:

[... image truncated]

Which appear to be the icon images of the different apps on my iPhone, as they would appear on the iPhone's Home Screen.

The timestamps appear to correspond to when I upgraded the Mac to Sonoma.

Per Add and customize widgets on Mac - Apple Support

... when I try to Edit Widgets (by right-clicking on the Mac's home page), I don't see to select any widgets from my iPhone. Until ... Allow chronid to accept incoming network connections.

At that point, I can see and select some additional widgets. From my iPhone.

Still haven't explored any of those widget for my Mac yet, but now I know how to get those widgets to appear on the Mac.

Thanks!
