When I click to open Apple mail, it can take several minutes for the incoming mail heading to appear on screen, and as much as another 10 minutes for the content of those messages to load. How to fix this?

Thank you for taking the time to try to help me with my problem.
An Apple service rep had me reinstall the OS. When I did that the system upgraded to Monterey OS 12.7, and Mail has been behaving perfectly ever since.
