Changing Apple ids on a device

I have used the same Apple ID for both my wife’s and my iPhone,Apple Watch,iPad, and iMacs. I want to go to family share, and that will require changing the Apple ID on one set of devices. What are the pitfalls of changing the Apple ID a device is associated with?

Hello magicclaus,

Thanks for choosing the Apple Support Communities. Sounds like you are looking at changing Apple ID's to start Family Sharing. Let's go over what will happen.

  1. If you change your Apple ID, you won't have access to your purchases including apps, music, movies, in-app purchases, etc.
  2. We do recommend a single Apple ID per user for all of that users devices.
  3. With that being said, you can keep the Apple ID you are using, add it to your Family Sharing Group, and share purchases (under some circumstances) and have access to almost everything and still benefit from separate Apple ID's. Check out the steps below to do that if you decide to set up new Apple ID's.

We hope this helps.

Cheers!
