72 hour rule with new passcode

I created a new iPhone passcode number last night and forgot it. I am now locked out of my phone for 3 hours. In the Apple article it says I can enter the old passcode within 72 hours but I am not given the option anywhere.

The Passcode Reset feature you’re describing is only available for iOS 17.

If the iPhone you changed the passcode for was not updated to iOS 17, you won’t be able to use Passcode Reset. You’ll need to erase your device and set it up again. If you have a backup, you’ll be able to restore your iPhone from it. The following support article can help you erase your iPhone: If you forgot your iPhone passcode - Apple Support
