SMS messages on ipad

My ipad has always received my text messages that come to my iPhone 13 (both SMS and iMessage) and my iPhone has NEVER had the "forward messages to ipad" enabled. Software is up to date on both devices. In the last week I have noticed I am unable to receive SMS text messages on my ipad. I can SEND SMS text messages from my ipad, just cannot receive them and I am not sure why.

SMS, Messages, iCloud is enabled and signed in with my name on both devices.

What is happening?

Hello cip176,

Message forwarding is required for a Wi-Fi only iPad, as explained here: Set up Messages on iPad - Apple Support. If you have a cellular-enabled iPad that has an active cellular plan and associated number, you may have different options. We'd advise reaching out to your wireless carrier that supplies that plan for further information, if so.
