What is the status of Apple Pay in India?

We heard that Apple is in talks regarding Apple pay support, can someone from apple team give an update on this? Since apple does not expose their NFC api for payments to other apps like Google pay, I cannot add my cards to wallet even though my IPhone has NFC. Its like I own the hardware but im locked out of it by apple. Only apple pay can use it? Please give an update.
