I have a new Macmini which I have left at my brother's house in Italy and I am trying to access it from the UK. I have set up the sharing options to allow me to log in remotely.
Using Terminal on the Macbook Pro I type "ssh username@IPaddress" but I get the message "port 22: Operation timed out"
WHat have I done wrong?

Did you set up your router so that you can ssh to its external, globally-unique IP address, at some well-defined port number, and have the incoming ssh requests sent to your Mac on the standard SSH port (port 22)?
Your Mac's IP address is probably a NON-globally-unique local address in the 192.168.0.something range. Trying to ssh to that address from outside your LAN is like trying to send a letter to "SMITH, somewhere in the U.S." from ten states away. The Post Office has no way to know which of the many SMITHs you mean. Likewise, while you are on the road, that 192.168.0.something address that you think belongs to your Mac will connect you to another machine – if it connects you to any machine at all.
Is that it, or is there some other issue?

Are you using a VPN? If so, disable it.
