I was planning on using a controller to play video games on mac and was wondering if any wired controller would work

Bluetooth controllers have the OS-supported* compatibility. Prefer to use what works out of the box, as else you may need to hunt down drivers, if those even exist** or work for your Mac model and OS version.

Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S controllers can be used with USB cable connected to a Windows computer. Windows has built-in drivers for these, not macOS. Even older Xbox controllers use proprietary cables, making them not connectable to computers anyway.

Controllers 1537, 1697, 1698 (each Xbox One) support wireless to Xbox, but do not use standard bluetooth. Those do not work wirelessly with Apple devices.

Controllers 1708, 1797, 1914 support wireless bluetooth and are supported by Apple devices and modern macOS versions (*Catalina (1708) or Big Sur (1797, Adaptive Controller, 1914) or later.

**There a Mac driver on Github, in alpha release, last update 2020, so coded for Intel, certainly not after Catalina or nor Apple Silicon. Lots of caveats and you have to compile it yourself. Looks abandoned because of new framework ‘DriverKit’ in modern versions macOS.
