screenshots unusually bigger than intended

i recently upgraded my MacBook air to MacOS Sonoma I did noticed some changes to safari. but when I captured selected part of the screen with SCREENSHOT, It was bigger than the size I wanted.

I don't know if its the upgrade did something to preview/screenshot or something, what happened?

The default screen shot resolution in Sonoma was changed from 144ppi for Retina screens to 72ppi. That's why they seem larger. You can downsize them in Preview or a number of other graphic apps.

Hi... I also recently noticed (macOS Sonoma 14.3) that screenshots now appear to be at least twice the width and height of what they used to be... I find it useful to grab screenshots of this or that which I later might turn into a rich text document... So I grab maybe 10 screenshots and I used to be able to just drag those into a document with text above or below to explain whatever... But now, those screenshots, by default are sized to be more or less as wide as my 16 inch laptop screen... So before I drag and add these 10 screenshots, I am currently manually resizing each one to take it down to a smaller and more reasonable size... That's a crazy, extra amount of work and I do that often... I sent feedback to Apple... But assuming nothing changes, isn't there a way for me to compel the screenshots to be more like the 1:1 sizing I used to have??? Where a say 4 x 4 inch screenshot was actually that size rather than being about 8 x 8??? Been looking at settings in Preview but don't really see a way to change the defaults??? Any help??? thanks...
