Sharing podcasts between my items

There has been some changes, it seems, on the way my podcast lists are working from iTunes to recent versions of both os and apps.

What I want to achieve:

Having a list of podcast subscriptions (various shows) synchronised between Mac, iPhone and iPad so that my podcast list on each item reflects what is played and not, independent on item it was played.

Before, the Mac list was the original, it was there the podcasts where downloaded, and they where synced to other items.

Now it seems like podcasts are synced to all items individually, and even though my selection of shows seem to be synced, I find shows on the Mac that I already listened to on the phone etc.

Any ideas how to set this up, to "make it work as it did with iTunes" ?
