How do you turn off mute and unmute on AirPods?

Honestly. This along with multiple other very bothersome/ridiculous issues the ios 17 update brought that they haven’t fixed asap. I get this pop up everytime I take one airpod out to hear something. It makes you legitimately question if they even tested their features before releasing them.

I was able to stop the constant pop up by changing the behavior of the press and press twice. In settings > Bluetooth > AirPods and setting end call to a single press.

I’ve had this for a while as well. Setting end calls by pressing once will eventually revert it to twice.

Seems like a bug which has yet to be fixed.

I was able to get the notification to stop by telling my phone to forget this device. Then I re-paired the headphones by hitting that reset button on the back of the case. I had hit this button several times but didn’t realize the case has to be open while you push button. You watch the opposite side for green light to turn white. Then the annoying notification stopped on my generation 3 headphones.

Called support twice yesterday. They don’t seem to have a solution… this issue has been on the internet for more than a month and apple looks like they don’t care…

it even makes my iPhone laggy for real..

Big issue since iOS 17.1.1 as I’m typing this the pop up showed up already 5 times. Making my brand new iPhone 15 pro max almost unusable. I want to return it for real and go back to Samsung. I have all three generations of AirPods. And it happens all the time. Same on my sisters phone since iOS 17.

I change mine. It changes back. I change it again it changes back. Ive done all of apples suggestions multiple times and nothing works. I hate the mute option on my airpods.

Spoiler alert: It doesn’t. It has however introduced a weird audio “feature” where an app that isn’t even running continues playing audio and can’t be stopped. Could be an app issue (Plex) but only since this update.

Yes you can change it back as you showed us and then if the notification pops up again it automatically changes to default

press once for mute

press twice for end call

I have made so many times the change that I can do it without looking the screen and I’m at the point of thinking to change to android!

Apple fix this issue right away , it’s annoying and as a person who makes a lot of calls daily I don’t have the time to change it everyday

Update. My little fix only worked for a few hours, so it was not a real fix. I hoping 17.2.1 will fix it.

I hate this prompt so much!! It happens randomly almost every day, and it’s driving me crazy.

There has not been a permanent fix for this yet and Apple could care less

Hope there will be a fix soon, I don’t want to press twice each time I want to end a call. The pop up is annoying, but less annoying than the double press issue for me.

Thank Zeus for this tip! It worked straight away. Its great having the end call changed back to 'Press Once' too, for the life of me I don't know why they changed the default setting to 'Mute - Press once'

i found a solution, I think…

While the troublesome AirPods are connected to your device, go to Settings, then Bluetooth. Select the ⓘ and change Press Once to Mute to Press Twice.
