upgraded from Mohave to Ventura
When I upgraded, over 50% of my emails in my Inbox were deleted. What did this happen and can I somehow retrieve them?
MacBook Air, macOS 12.6

Your email will always be available on your webmail provider's site unless something went wrong there.
The usual fix for an errant mail account is to remove the account completely and recreate it from scratch using the needed credentials from the website.
Thank you. I'll try that especially because I have now been unable to RECEIVE email. I get this on my Inbox. (attached screenshot). I feel so helpless but I'll try to uninstall and start over. I will say I am able to receive my email on my older Mac Air and also on my iPhone 6 with no problems. So I don't understand why it's not working on this newer Mac Air with the new OS Ventura. Maybe I shouldn't have upgraded :(
Are you trying to set up a POP or IMAP email account? Your server indicates POP.
In my settings it says the Incoming Mail Server is IMAP and the Host Name is pop3.iowatelecom.net. The Outgoing Mail Server is SMTP and the Host Name is smtp.iowatelecom.net. I really have no clue what the answer to your questionis, kinda untechie. My guess would be IMAP.
Then I would delete the account and try the setup once again as already suggested.
