Black frames in iMovie

So, I imported videos that have little lags, when I see them in my iPhone or even in iMovie they look fine, the problem comes when I put them in the editing bar and zoom in black frames appear when the lagging happens, I can't even trim them cause they don't last that long, also when I don't manipulate the videos they look fine, when I speed them up or down, the black frames become visible in the preview.

What I did was screen record the videos and now they look fine, I know it's not the best solution but it worked

Also seeing the black frames inserts on a clip in the timeline of a project. Really annoyingly they appeared when I reopened a project that I had previously played and exported fine. Any subsequent export now fails with error message below.

I had worked extensively on the clip adjusting some voice track parts to sync with the video (previously imported from tape) so I suspect that there is some hidden frame timing mechanism that has failed and inserted the black frames.

May have been induced by change in crop size that was also done to remove some noise.

Can't seem to rescue the project so back to square on as the original media clip plays fine. AARGH.
