Is it worth buying an imac 27 inch desktop It would be 3 years old already but i like that big screen. What is the difference between the 24 inch and 27 inch besides the screen size are there disadvantages now

The biggest difference is the 24" uses an Apple silicon CPU, any 27" iMac does not.
Another option is a Mac Mini paired with a 27" or 32" 3rd party monitor with build in speakers, about $200 less than a tricked out 24" iMac. You can configure the Mini much further than the 24" iMacs and excellent 32" monitors can be had for about $400.

You're welcome. You could always buy a current Mac mini and pair it with a 27" monitor. That way, you get the benefit of the higher performance silicon CPUs, but still have a larger screen.
One should use great caution, when buying used Mac's. E-Bay, Amazon and most private sellers should be avoided with a 100 foot pole. You can suffer a whole lot of pain and despair, if the iMac is a clunker or not properly prepared for resale.

If you have your heart set on a 27" iMac, then I suggest you look at Apple Refurbished or OWC.

I suppose it would be really stupid to buy a computer already 3 years old just because of screen size. Ii saw one on amazon and was very skeptical to buy it. Thanks for your help I suppose 3 inches doesn't make that much difference

Personally I started moving away from the iMac all-in one's years ago to Mac mini's, so I can second Dialabrain's suggestion to consider a Mac mini and a decent 27" aftermarket display.
27" 5K displays from Apple, LG, and Samsung are very expensive.
You could buy a 27" 4K display and run it in Retina "like 2560x1440" mode.
Look for monitors that have:
Monitors don't always have built-in speakers, microphones, or Webcams. You may need to shop for these things separately. If a monitor has thin bezels, you may find that pretty much all of the Webcams out there will clip on in such a way that they cover a small portion of the top of the screen.
We have a pair of mid tier 2020 27" Intel iMacs.
Both are everything we wanted them to be and have had absolutely no problems. Both are on Sonoma and operating beautifully. They are fabulous machines with 512 GB drives and 16GB RAM.
But, we bought them new and at the time that was, and still is for us, a very good solution. For the things my wife and I do, 27" Retina screens are simply unequaled in performance at the price point we paid.
If I were looking for different Macs, I don't think we'd choose the 2020 27" models now. Time marches on and the future for Macs is Apple silicone and I can definitely live with that. But the way we work upgrades is to always keep the best operating "old" Mac. So our plan will have us at least one 27" iMac until about 2030 or more likely until it just simply dies.
Thanks so much for the advice. Im thinking about it. I looked at them from the website you gave me and it is tempting. I suppose if I do it i should consider the additional warranty. But then as someone else said its already 3 years old. You have all been so helpful
