It’s extremely difficult to determine remotely, as even legit serial numbers are being counterfeited and today’s internet marketplace is absolutely FLOODED w/ imitations.

Your only real assurance is to purchase from Apple - or an Apple-authorized reseller - and break Apple’s distinctive tamper-evident seals yourself.

If your device’s OS reports “device can’t be verified” you most assuredly have counterfeits.

As mentioned above… If you got a “great deal” from a vendor other than Apple or an authorized reseller, it’s quite possible they’re counterfeit.

The more likely the seller either can or does disappear, or the bigger the “savings” from list price, the more likely they’re counterfeit.

And legitimate serial numbers are routinely copied, so please don’t assume any serial number lookup is proof of anything other than the existence of one legitimate pair and some unknown number of counterfeit pairs with that same serial number.
