Connecting to work iMac from home iMac

I finally got the ssh to connect. It asks for my password I enter and it connects. When I go to Finder to see my work computer it is not there so I don't get the Share Screen option. This works fine when I bring the computer to work and connect it locally. I think the ssh finally connected when I checked to use global hostname but I'm not 100% sure on that.

It sounds like you can make the connection when

  • Your personal machine is at work, connected to your company's network

but not when

  • Your personal machine is at home, connected to your Internet Service Provider (ISP)

If that's the case, there's a simple explanation: Most corporate networks are set up to block outside access to most corporate machines in one way, or another.

To connect to your corporate network from home, you may have to use a VPN – a sort of "tunnel" that extends your employer's network to your house, using the Internet instead of dedicated wires. Often there will be some security associated with the VPN, because the employer doesn't want any random outsider accessing their network.

If you have questions on how to set this up, contact your employer's Information Technology (IT) department.

Thank you for your response. It's not a corporate network. It's a small Law Firm where the iMac is connected to a Comcast Business router. I have configured port forwarding on the router. I use the routers external IP address to make the ssh connection. When I go to Finder the computer does not show. When I make the connection while on the work network the work iMac does show when I click Finder.
