Mac OS Sonoma vs. Ventura - External HD Temps

On my Mac Studio I have a LaCie 2Big Dock connected via Thunderbolt. I also use iStat Menus to monitor system usage and temperatures. For a long time, I'd had concerns that since Apple had transitioned to an all-SSD lineup, the amount of attention paid to how/when the OS spun hard drives up and down was lacking. As a result, I believed that the OS would unnecessarily leave external drives spun up when it didn't need to, causing unneeded wear and wasting cycles on the drives. An indicator of this is the drive temperature. This morning I looked at the 30 day temp history on my LaCie drive, and I saw something rather stark. Sonoma was released on Sep 26, and thats the day I upgraded. I can only conclude that Apple refocused on this issue in Sonoma

I never found an advantage in trying to micro-manage the drive storage or temperature.

I might suggest uninstalling your iStat Menus to monitor system usage and temperatures.

or at the least look for an update ... if you put so much emphasis on its results.
