annoying bugs with latest MacOS's (freezing Safari, crashing Text Edit), and M1 MBP (ocl track pad unresponsiveness)

This is a few issues wrapped up into one Communities post.

I have a 2021 16" MBP, M1 Max chip, and have generally been pretty happy with it. It originally came with Monterey (I think I'm remembering that correctly). It's currently updated to Sonoma as of about 2 weeks ago.

Despite my general satisfaction with its performance (so much better than Intel chips!), there are a few things that have been bugging me....

1) Safari regularly freezing when loading pages

I have been noticing this since MacOS Ventura, at least. Safari will regularly (daily) just stop working. It won't beachball or crash, but when I select a link, enter a web page address, etc, it will just sit there, the loading progress bar will begin and then stay put. I get tired of it and open Firefox, instead.

Sometimes closing/restarting Safari seems to help, other times not. I have, at various times, cleared the history, cleared the cache, etc. Problem keeps coming back, and is very frustrating because I would prefer to keep my browsing on Safari so that the history carries over to my iPhone.

I know it's not an issue with my bandwidth because when I load the same page in Firefox or Chrome, it's instant. I've also checked Ookla's Speed Test, and no speed issues.

I had hoped this would be fixed with Sonoma, but it definitely is not.

2) Text Edit beachballing / crashing

This trick seems all new with Sonoma. Just as the title suggest, sometimes when I open Text Edit, the app beachballs and I have to force quit it. This sometimes happens several times in a row, as it did this morning. I was opening the app, as opposed to it already being open and me trying to open another document. And, this isn't an issue of trying to open some massive document (again, opening the app from scratch to a blank page).

3) Track Pad unresponsiveness

When the machine was new, I had occasional issues with the trackpad seeming unresponsive. In part, I think this may have been because I wasn't used to such a large trackpad (my last MBP, a 2013 model, had a much smaller pad), and my palm was touching it near the bottom while I was trying to do finger gestures, so the thing was confused by multiple contact inputs. This seemed to get better with time, so I chalked it up to my own ergonomic learning curve.

I seem to be noticing it again, since the Sonoma installation.

Before I upgraded to Sonoma, I had used Bitdefender for a time, based on some of the wonky Safari behavior and some things I read saying that Macs are now moving more into the crosshairs of malware. It didn't discover anything after months and after a time I felt it was just using system resources without contributing anything, so before the OS upgrade, I removed it, completely (like, I used Find Any File and removed any and every file with appropriate naming and install date).

Outside of native Apple OS software, I use pretty normal things.....carbon copy cloner, 1password, bartender, Backblaze, dropbox. I did get Malwarebytes today because it's been well reputed in the Mac community from what I can see, and I can run it when I want it - I can prevent it from being a resource sucking background process, unlike most resident malware finders (eg, Bitdefender). It came up with a negative scan.

I have EtreCheck (just got it today) installed, and can provide report if that's helpful.

Thanks for any thoughts anyone has!

A few items of note in your Etrecheck, none may be the culprit but my suggestion is to completely uninstall them (with the vendors' uninstaller, not just be finding files and removing them, as some files my be in hard to access locations):

NordVPN -- is still installed

Cisco Any Connect -- another VPN also seems to be installed

(Two VPNs is a bad idea, I would uninstall both)

Plus I see an install of Clean My Mac, which has created a lot of havoc for users as reported in this forum. I would completely uninstall it with the vendor uninstaller.

I'd also uninstall Malwarebytes, although I use it myself, just as a temporary measure to see if there was a conflict with one of the above. Certainly make sure real-time protection is off.

None of this may help but if removing all of the above completely (with uninstallers) does improve things, you can one at a time reinstall items to see when or if the issues return.

Is your Mac an externally "Managed" computer (e.g. by your employer)? If it is, there may be other conflicts with the remote management software.

Hi Randall.

I just did "everything".

Rebooted laptop into recovery partition....

Ran First Aid on every level from data/Mac HD....Mac HD (higher level volume).....container disk....and finally the SSD itself.

Only issue there is that the two times I tried to first aid the "container disk", it beach balled on me and I had to hold down power button to force shut down. I think this has happened to me before, at the container disk level. Not sure if it's a bug, or something else. (Photo attached, below.)

I then restarted and ran hardware diagnostics from the recovery partition. Nothing...came up clean.

I then rebooted into Safe Mode, in which I am now running as I write this. Will continue on this way and see if funky Safari behavior gets better (it's occurring frequently enough that living in safe mode for a few hours should reveal it....the text edit and track pad issues are less frequent, so I don't think I'll be able to tell about them).

I could always back up, erase all content/settings, and do a clean OS install and restore my stuff....but that is a lot of time and effort I could use for other things.

Thanks.

In Etrecheck, you can find the major and minor problems yourself. It will even point out what to do with those problematic/unnecessary apps.

Best uninstall all modifiers, VPNs, anti-virus apps etc.

By the way, I am using a 2018 15" Intel MBP, and don't have any problems with Sonoma. For fun, I checked with Etrecheck too. :)

Steve,

Thanks for your help!

Not externally managed - it's all mine. But, I do use Citrix for work-critical applications.

I did the following.

Nord VPN

Went to Nord VPN website and found this.....

Uninstall NordVPN from macOS

If you need to completely remove NordVPN from your Mac, Apple has an always-up-to-date article on how to uninstall software on MacOS.

Which means drag and drop the app in the trash.

I did do a FAF search of "NordVPN" after I trashed the app, and found the following....

So, while there was quite of bit of Nord cruft left behind, none of it looked important to OS function....more just cache, plist, log files.

Citrix

Since I need this one for work, I can't get rid of it.

However, under system settings / general / login items, I found a Citrix Workspace background task (see below), which I have now switched off. If my work apps stop functioning, I can just switch it back on.

CleanMyMac

I debated installing that at the time, and probably shouldn't have.

Having said that, I uninstalled it a little while ago. I used FAF to do this. CleanMyMac's "uninstaller" is its own uninstaller module within the app itself (meant for use on any app)....which seems a little sketchy.

The only MacPaw files that FAF shows now are for Gemini II (a dupe file finder).

I will reboot following the above, and see how it goes.
