Time Machine backups extremely slow

Since recently upgrading to Ventura my time machine backups are ridiculously slow. After this first surfaced I reformatted my external HD and started over. This took many hours. Now with even small backups, after a few hours, such as what is presently running Time Machine indicates 798 GB available, - About 7 hours remaining, 336.0 MB copied.

Any ideas what is taking ™ so long? This is how ™ has run since the upgrade to Ventura.

iMac 27″, macOS 10.15

Backing up 421 GB of data will take more than a day. Probably two or more. Let it finish. If it is interrupted for any number of reasons it will just need to start over from the beginning.

The "time remaining" estimate can be wildly inaccurate. It may finish well before 2 AM, or it might take another 12 hours.

You are conflating at least two different concerns though. If it took many hours to reformat a TM backup disk, then it has been operating in an advanced state of failure, and you should throw it out. That is the end for it. Don't use it any more.

On the other hand many hours to complete an initial TM backup of 421 GB is completely normal. Subsequent incremental backups won't take nearly that long.

I have run 1st Aid on all drives/ containers, some errors detected and unable to fix.

If Disk Utility encountered errors it was unable to fix, that's another symptom of drive failure. If they were fixed on the second attempt, ok, but those errors may occur again.

reformatted...? You say very little about the details here

ref: GUID/APFS is recommended

👍

That clears up a lot of confusion. When you initially formatted the TM backup disk, did you choose APFS? If you didn't, no problem, but TM will automatically reformat it anyway. That adds time to the backup.

In any event, 421 GB is a copious amount of data and TM will stall or appear to stall at many points in its progress (or apparent lack thereof). I think you ruled out disk failure, as least as far as the backup drive is concerned.

I tried reformatting the hard drive and starting Time machine again. many hours and stuck again.

I have been travelling and just unpacked my iMac.

I reformatted a different external 1TB ssd drive that was operating correctly with ™ on a MacMini, as Guid/APFS and the same issue yesterday. My iMac has 421GB used.

9:00 am started backup

2:00 pm 35.9%, 143gb, 3 hours remain time.

4:00 pm 43.6%, 144 gb, 5 hours remain time.

7:00 pm 58.4 % 155 gb 5 hrs remain time.

Today:

8:00 am 45.6% 658 MB copied 19 hours remaining

2:00 pm 39.5% 659.3 MB copied 12 hours remaining.

I have run 1st Aid on all drives/ containers, some errors detected and unable to fix.

I run 1st aid again, in safe mode on all drives and containers, all passed and OK.

I do not know what else I can do? obviously not a Hard Drive fault.

Suggestions please .
