Bluetooth Headphones disconnecting from iPhone 12 Pro Max

I'm having a bit of an issue with my Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max where the connected Apple AirPod Pro 2 ( but also my previously used Microsoft Surface Earbuds ) won't automatically reconnect after not having been used for a longer period ( like say not until the next day ).

This wasn't the case until one of the later iOS 16 Patches after which taking the Earbuds out of their Charging Case would no longer confirm their connection with the iPhone via a voiced Phrase telling me which device they'd be connected to ( or the Chime on the AirPods ).

Going into the BT Settings I'd be greeted with a "XXX's AirPods Pro Not Connected" and if tapped on leave me hanging with a rotating Spinner.

To solve this I'd have to put the AirPods / Earbuds back into their Case, turn off Bluetooth on the iPhone, wait a few seconds, and turn it on again for AirPods / Earbuds to reestablish their connection once taken out of their Cases a second time.

Any suggestions how to solve this? 🤔🤨

Hello Durahl,

Thank you for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.

Let's attempt to reset your AirPods and test to see if the issue persists:

"You might need to reset your AirPods if they won't charge, or to fix a different issue.

  1. Put your AirPods in their charging case, and close the lid.
  2. Wait 30 seconds.
  3. Open the lid of your charging case, and put your AirPods in your ears.
  4. Go to Settings > Bluetooth. Or go to Settings > [your AirPods].
    • If your AirPods appear there as connected, tap the More Info button  next to your AirPods, tap Forget This Device, then tap again to confirm.
    • If your AirPods don't appear there, continue to the next step.

5.Put your AirPods in their charging case, and keep the lid open.

6.Press and hold the setup button on the back of the case for about 15 seconds, until the status light on the front of the case flashes amber, then white.*AirPods charging cases

7.Reconnect your AirPods: With your AirPods in their charging case and the lid open, place your AirPods close to your iPhone or iPad. Follow the steps on your device's screen."

If the issue persists, can you provide a few more details? Are you able to pair to another device and test? Also, what is your exact iOS version?

Cheers!

The iPhone 12 Pro Max's iOS version at the time of writing is 17.0.3.

I've performed the suggested reset but will have to wait until the next day to see if it solved the problem.

Before doing so - and with the problem again being present - I took some screenshots to showcase the Problem in action:

⬆️ In the first picture we see the AirPods being recognized ( having just been taken out of the Charging Case ) but Not Connected? 🤨

⬆️ On the second Picture I'm trying to connect to them ( Spinner spinning ) to no avail - They won't connect.

⬆️ Third Picture shows the Case joinging the fray in being recognized as I insert the AirPods back into them while still trying to connect to them.

⬆️ After having turned Bluetooth OFF and ON again and having the AirPods taken out of the Charging Case again they now appear as Connected.
