Very simply put, I take a picture of a form I need to send, download it to the desktop under the iPhone icon. I then move files to a folder and open it. When I try to open the picture, the message I get is that the computer can't open the file because it isn't recognized or the file is corrupt

Be sure to note at the bottom of that section the information about compatibility with Windows 10:

1. On your iOS or iPadOS device, open the Settings app.
2. Tap Camera, then tap Formats.
3. Tap Most Compatible. From now on, your camera will create photos and videos in JPEG and H.264 formats.
