Mail opening blank pages on start

MacBook Pro M2 OS Sonoma 14.0 Mail Version 16.0

The mail app recently started to open blank pages that cannot be closed or used to send mail.

Do you have any ideas of what is going on?

There could be something in the main User Account playing up. To further isolate this - Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac. Then log out of the Main User account and log into the dummy account and test again if the issue persists.

If the issue is present in the dummy account - then, this appears to be a System Wide issue on the computer.

Download the Application Etrecheck directly from the Developer.

The Application is Not a " Silver Bullet "  and is  only a tool to examine the Hardware / Software used on this computer

This is a Diagnostic Tool that makes no changes to the computer Hardware / Software used on this computer

The application is free or paid from added features.

There was no post with a solution here. I used the Apple support chat and was encouraged to check each of my mail folders to see if any were loading. I had a too large file in my Outbox. Once I removed it and restarted Mail, the issue disappeared. It was clearly linked to the Outbox in this case.

Very recently, on another similar thread, the cause was things stuck in the Outbox. With yours, the size sounds like it was the problem. But on the other thread, there didn't seem to be a reason why they ended up in the Outbox.

Is the Mail Application using " Column View " ?

Does this issue occur when responding to an E-mail ?

Does of occur when composing a New E-mail ?

I have tried using Column View to respond to an e-mail and a smaller Window appears

I have tried using Column View to to compose a New E-mail

In Both Cases I am Not Using Full Screen Mode in Mail

No issues closing the Blank E-Mail windows using the Red Button

Perhaps the Issue on your machine is using Mail in Full Screen Mode ?

I had tried to send the email and it seemed to have gone, but I didn't check the outbox and I didn't get a message saying it was stuck. Then the recipient told me she hadn't received it, so I made the pdf size smaller and it went with no problem. It never occurred to me to check the outbox until the Apple rep mentioned it this morning. It did seem to be the size of the attachment, and I haven't had a problem since I deleted it.
