Change Apple ID to alias@icloud.com

I am trying to change my Apple ID login email address, which has been an email address of an external email provider forever.

As I would not like to use my cumbersome primary @icloud.com address, I created a more elegant alias @icloud.com address for my primary @icloud.com address specifically for that purpose.

When I now go to the AppleID section on appleid.apple.com and try to change my AppleID to the newly created alias@icloud.com address, it only says, that I should continue on one of my devices. Apart from that, nothing happens and I also can’t find anything in my device settings to change the AppleID address.

So how can I change my AppleID address from my current email address of an external email provider to my newly create alias address from @icloud.com?

Hi RogerMiller90,

Thank you for that description, it helped us understand.

Found in the article What are email aliases in iCloud Mail? - Apple Support you will find the following information about email aliases.

Aliases can’t be changed, transferred, or converted to primary accounts. You can delete an email alias at any time. If you have three email aliases and you delete one, you must wait 7 days before you can create a new one.

We hope this helps.

Take care!

Hey RogerMiller90,

Here's what can be used to sign in with your Apple ID: Manage and use your Apple ID - Apple Support

Sign in with your Apple ID

Use the same Apple ID every time you're asked to sign in to an Apple device or service. You can sign in with your Apple ID, or with other email addresses or phone numbers on file in your Apple ID account. You can find these additional email address and phone numbers in Settings (or System Settings) > your name > Sign-In & Security.

Hello RogerMiller90,

We have a few questions about what you are trying to accomplish to help determine why you haven't been able to change your Apple ID login. You mention wanting to change it from "primary" to "alias". Do you just want to add an alias iCloud email address? Or do you want to change your Apple ID altogether?

As for the message you get to continue on one of your devices, there may be a verification code being sent. We're using information from this article: Change your Apple ID

If you changed your Apple ID to a third-party email address, check your email for a verification code, then enter the code. Learn what to do if you didn't get the email.

You will also not be able to change your Apple ID if you've done so within the past 30 days. If you simply want to add an alias iCloud email address, use the steps in this guide: Add and manage email aliases for iCloud Mail on iCloud.com

We look forward to hearing back from you.

Take care.

Thanks for your reply.

My AppleID email address, which I have to use to login to my iCloud account, has always been (since many years): me@externalprovider.com

My iCloud.com email address, that Apple has created for me, when I created my Apple account (many years ago) is: complicated_me_address@icloud.com

I now just recently these days have already created an alias email address for compli-cated_me_address@icloud.com named: shortme@icloud.com

So I already have created an alias address and have no questions about how to create that.

But I now want to change my AppleID from me@externalprovider.com to shortme@icloud.com (so to the newly created alias of my primary Apple mail address). Is that possible?

Because as said, if I go to appleid.apple.com and try to change my AppleID, I type “shortme@icloud.com” into the “Change my AppleID” prompt, but then, it only says, that I should continue on one of my devices and nothing else happens. I also don’t receive any verification code neither at shortme@icloud.com nor at any of the other email addresses?

I hope, I could make it more clear, what I am trying to do?
