what if the camera icon does not come up ?
I am trying to scan an item on my iphone but the camera doesn't come up as an option when I try and start a new note

You'll want to start by making sure your iPhone is updated to the latest software version, which is iOS 17.0.3. If needed, learn how to update here: Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support
Next, if you don't see the camera icon in a new note, do you see a plus sign on the screen? If so, you should be able to tap the plus sign to view your options, including opening the camera to scan a document.
