I’ve just bought an Apple Watch 9 but I can’t set it up

I’ve just bought an Apple Watch 9 but I can’t set it up using my iPhone 8s. I already have an old Apple Watch 3 that I have been using for a few years but I thought I’d treat myself to an upgrade for my birthday. When I try to set up the new watch it says I need iOS 17 to do it the quick way. I’ve discovered that the iPhone 8 won’t support iOS 17 so I tried to use the manual method but I can’t pair my new Watch with my iPhone. It tries for a while and then it comes up with the message “pairing failed”. Should I unpair my old Apple Watch 3 first?

Apple Watch Series 3, watchOS 8

You need a iphone XS or higher to use that watch. You either return the watch and get your money back, or purchase newer iphone.
