External GPS receivers are frequently used with both WiFi+Cellular (i.e., that do have built-in GNSS/GPS capabilities) and WiFi Only models of iPad (that have no GNSS) are often used in marine, aviation and vehicular applications. These can either be directly connected via Lightning or wirelessly via Bluetooth. Their are various third-party manufacturers, of which two are BadElf and Garmin Glo.
When using Bluetooth, consider that these typically have limited range - typically no more than 30' (10m) in ideal line-of-sight of conditions. As the use of a Bluetooth-connected GPS receiver, when your iPad will be located within the steel superstructure of the vessel, may be limited.

I know a GPS needs a direct look at the sky. My question is, does someone make a remote GPS receiver that I can put outside, that will communicate with my iPad,
