Watch OS 10.0.1 removed side button functionality.

Watch OS 10.0.1 removed required functionality for the side button of my AW8. It previously showed me current and recently used apps and permitted me to close them. It now shows Control Center. That is a feature for which I have no use. Please, is there a way to return to the previous side button function? I would like to quit apps when they are no longer being used so as to not drain the battery even faster than it already drains? Make Control Center an obscure app that I might ignore or delete?

apps in the background are suspended to the storage so they should not really use any power
