when connected to tv thru hdmi laptop volume controls dont work.

how your Mac controls the sound into your other devices is dependant on the device. for example, I can control my internal speakers on the Mac's end.

and if I choose my USB Advanced Audio Device, it too is controlled by the Mac.

but when I choose my TV, (SAMSUNG) it shows the sound as maxed out on the mac's end and I control the sound on the TV's end.

it is a function of how your Mac and your devices communicate with each other.
