iPhone 14 Pro battery draining quickly

Anyone else having issue with the battery health for iPhone 14 pro, especially after the latest iOS (17) update? If so, has anyone find any solutions to this?

In the past few weeks it went from 100% to 95% in the blink of an eye and I haven't changed anything in my usage or the apps I usually use. The phone is 10 months old, I feel it is just too new for the battery to be degrading like this. I always knew that Apple devices have these issues with the battery, but it just starts to be worse and worse with every device they release...

Unfortunately Apple Support has been totally useless, telling me essentially to stop using certain features (like "Always on display") or reset the phone and manually set it up. All of this while still being in warranty and paying for the extra warranty on top of this. Super disappointed in the solutions and the support received.

The best thing we can do is take a look at your battery activity, and take some steps to maximize your battery performance. Take a look at the steps and link below, test out the steps, and let us know if they are helpful.

Update to the latest software.

Always make sure your device is using the latest version of iOS.

  • If you are using iOS 5 or later, see if you need an update. Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
  • If an update is available, you can plug your device into a power source and update wirelessly or plug it into your computer and update with the latest version of iTunes.

Optimize your settings.

There are two simple ways you can preserve battery life — no matter how you use your device: adjust your screen brightness and use Wi‑Fi.

Dim the screen or turn on Auto-Brightness to extend battery life.

  • To dim, open Control Center and drag the Brightness slider to the bottom.
  • Auto-Brightness adjusts your screen to lighting conditions automatically. To activate it, go to Settings > Accessibility. Tap Display & Text Size, then turn on Auto-Brightness.

When you use your device to access data, a Wi‑Fi connection uses less power than a cellular network — so keep Wi‑Fi on at all times. To turn on Wi‑Fi, go to Settings > Wi‑Fi to access a Wi‑Fi network.

Enable Low Power Mode.

Introduced with iOS 9, Low Power Mode is an easy way to extend the battery life of your iPhone when it starts to get low. Your iPhone lets you know when your battery level goes down to 20%, and again at 10%, and lets you turn on Low Power Mode with one tap. Or you can enable it by going to Settings > Battery. Low Power Mode reduces display brightness, optimizes device performance, and minimizes system animations. Apps including Mail will not download content in the background, and features like AirDrop, iCloud sync, and Continuity will be disabled. You can still use key functions like making and receiving phone calls, email, and messages, accessing the Internet, and more. And when your phone charges up again, Low Power Mode automatically switches off.

View Battery Usage information

With iOS, you can easily manage your device’s battery life, because you can see the proportion of your battery used by each app (unless the device is charging). To view your usage, go to Settings > Battery.

Here are the messages you may see listed below the apps you’ve been using:

Background Activity. This indicates that the battery was used by the app while it was in the background — that is, while you were using another app.

  • To improve battery life, you can turn off the feature that allows apps to refresh in the background. Go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh and select Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi & Cellular Data, or Off to turn off Background App Refresh entirely.
  • If the Mail app lists Background Activity, you can choose to fetch data manually or increase the fetch interval. Go to Settings > Accounts & Passwords > Fetch New Data.

Location and Background Location. This indicates that the app is using location services.

  • You can optimize your battery life by turning off Location Services for the app. Turn off in Settings > Privacy > Location Services.
  • In Location Services, you can see each app listed with its permission setting. Apps that recently used location services have an indicator next to the on/off switch.

Home & Lock Screen. This indicates that the Home screen or Lock screen was displayed on your device. For example, the display was awakened by pressing the Home button or by a notification.

  • If an app frequently wakes your display with notifications, you can turn off push notifications for the app in Settings > Notifications. Tap the app and set Allow Notifications to Off.

No Cell Coverage and Low Signal. This indicates either that you are in a poor cell coverage area and your iOS device is searching for a better signal or that you’ve used your device in low-signal conditions, which has affected your battery life.

  • You can optimize your battery life by turning on Airplane mode. Open Control Center and tap the Airplane mode icon. Note that you cannot make or receive calls while in Airplane mode.

Plug in and power on your computer to charge your device.

Make sure your computer is plugged in and powered on when you’re using it to charge your iOS device via USB. If your device is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, your device’s battery may drain. Note that iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS cannot be charged with a FireWire power adapter or FireWire-based car charger."

I had this issue and fixed it. Go to Settings:

  1. Check your apps running in background. You can put a time limit on these in Screen time.
  2. Turn off “fetch” for mail. Get your emails when you request - not all the time.
  3. Make sure videos that you are not watching are not trying to keep playing.
  4. Zoom and Skype both use up battery faster.
  5. Display/ brightness - turn off “always on display”. Shorten time before auto lock.
  6. Stand by: You can set to auto turn off display when not using phone.
  7. Battery: Turn on Low Power Mode
  8. Turn off Notifications from Apps that are low priority to you.
  9. Avoid using your Hotspot with another device. That definitely depletes battery faster.
  10. Keep software updated.
  11. . Try to always watch videos, use Zoom or Skype, or edit videos when phone is plugged in.

If all this fails, check with carrier for network reset, and contact Apple tech support for help.

I noticed my battery life also improved with latest software update.

Status now: I went from charging 2x/ day to being only 40-50% down after 14 hours.

I average 10+ hours a day on my phone using it more like a second laptop.

1. Check Battery Health: It's worth checking the battery health of your iPhone 14 Pro. To do this, go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health. Here, you can see the maximum capacity of your battery and if it has significantly degraded. Apple's official recommendation is to replace the battery if the maximum capacity drops below 80%.

2. Update iOS: Sometimes battery-related issues can be addressed through iOS updates. In some cases, particular iOS versions can introduce new battery management improvements that may address rapid battery drain. Therefore, it's always a good idea to keep your device up to date.

3. App Usage Analysis: Consider checking the Battery section in the Settings app to see which apps consume the most power. You may discover an app that's causing higher-than-expected battery drain. If so, you can try updating the app or contacting the app's developer for support.

4. Reset Settings: If you haven't already tried, you can attempt to reset all settings on your device. This won't erase your data but will reset all settings, including Wi-Fi passwords, wallpaper, and home screen layout. You can do this by going to Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings.

5. Battery Replacement: If the battery health is significantly below the expected level and you're experiencing rapid degradation, it might be worth considering discussing a potential battery replacement with Apple Support, especially since your device is still under warranty.

Regarding your disappointment with the support received, it's understandably disheartening when expectations aren't met, especially when paying for extra warranty coverage. If you're unsatisfied with the support, it might be worth escalating the issue to a supervisor or manager at Apple Support for further assistance.

UPDATE - I somehow fixed my problem.

1 - I installed the next update.

2 - Support did something to update my phone in the background.

3- I took my phone off of the Low Power Mode.

4 - Max capacity is at 98%

5 - Optimize Battery Charging is off - otherwise it only charges to 80%

What is happening lately (after mid December is that it charges up, and goes down to about 50% at the end of the day. Not too bad as I am using my phone about 7 hrs a day.

Hope this helps someone.

Support is aware they are having issues with this - and are able to troubleshoot from their side, too.

Meanwhile, my Siri is still not acting right. It isn't supposed to be listening and does anyway. "We" are doing "battle" whenever I try to send an email, text, or type notes because it wants to type whatever is said on TV or in the room around me. Very annoying. And CREEPY!

I have 14 pro for 14 months. It was 99% till I upgraded to iOS 17. Usually I wait for a while to see if iOS has no problems. My bf has the same phone bought at the same time as mine and he has automatic updates. he had no issues. He still has 100% battery. So I updated somewhere in November 23’ and since then, so two months battery lost 3%. so one year 1% and in two months 3 more % lost. And I’m not heavy user. Strangely to say after latest update to ios 17.2 the battery was more down 1% next day.

Almost from the day one I own the phone I turned off all futures to safe battery, not overcharging, turning off at night, at work using wi fi only and airplane mode. It is so ridiculous to sacrifice all that to preserve battery life. And for what? So Apple with new updates can trow all that to down to drain?

it is highly annoying

When I traded my old iPhone 10x after 4 years use the phone had 80% battery life with all futures fully used. 14 pro battery won’t last that long if this s* happening.

Well, at least I can tell this is definitely iOS 17 problem.

Is that solution stop being paranoid with battery saving and start using fully till it’s very low capacity and then just buy new battery??? Give it two years?

Feb 11, 2024 10:17 PM in response to telkj

My phone 14 pro did degrade 1 % only after 12 months of using, after I upgraded to iOS 17 in November I have 95 % now. And this is with all features turned off, turning off phone for night and using average 3-4 hr daily. Why I even have this expensive smart phone if all good features need to be turned off to preserve battery life?

I agree that it most likely new iOS fault. But funny to say my bf phone we bought same time and he even updated to iOS 17 even earlier than I am is still 100%. I don’t understand why. Seems like ppl who have problems with battery draining have defective phones, including me, ugh

Its annoying beyond words.

Dont use battery saver mode it kinda ruins the battery so i would recommend not to use it. I have a 14 pro too and the battery is horrible but, turning off battery saver mode can increase the battery health.Tip keep the battery over 20% and under 80% of charge:)

and one more thing turn of Bluetooth when you dont use it. Also here is information about battery cycles form apple.

you can find out how many charge cycles you have by plugging youre iphone into a pc and downloading 3utools.

Oct 17, 2023 2:55 AM in response to Varunprakash

Thanks Varunprakash, I already have these settings in place and I have always had them, that's something I told Apple Support also. What I still had on was "Display always on" and I changed it. Also, keeping the phone always on low battery mode or airplane mode is not a solution unfortunately..

I suspect something with the new software or an issue with my phone specifically.

Hello Irina

curiously I noticed a rapid decline in my battery duration. It prompted me to look at the battery health of my iPhone 14 Pro.

I discovered that at just 12 months old it has lost 13% capacity now stands at 87%

I’m noticing also that it hits the redline and am forced to plug it in twice a day.

This since upgrading to 17 seems to have exacerbated the battery decline.

I’m going to keep an eye on this and contact Apple support. I’ve also placed this in Feedback Assistant.

I reckon something is not right here and that this may go further as there are many threads about this.

good luck your end.

Jason
