Bug or Setting?

Has anyone else seen this and is it a bug or a setting that needs adjusting?

It's very difficult to describe. I have a MacBook Pro with and external display attached. Sometimes if I drag an app from the MacBook to the external display it "rotates" over so it looks like an app does when it's docked to the side in stage manager. It then won't stick to the external display and returns to the MacBook display.

Sometimes I can get it to drag ok by doing random things like double clicking on the external display background or changing to another screen (there's no particular pattern I've found that works every time). Other times I have to close the app and reopen it.

I hope that all makes sense. Has anybody any idea what's going on?

Unfortunately Stacks have to go somewhere. And they will go on the main window screen as set by the Displays Settings/Preferences (the one with the menubar slid on top). You want loose organization of files on your desktop. So you want to uncheck "Groups" in the View menu, and then the View Options will give you the option to loosely organize files. When you do so, it will remember their positions as long as you don't overfill your desktop.

Hi all,

I appreciate all your comments but I'm not 100% convinced we are on the same page here. I've managed to capture a screen shot of what is happening and have included it (sorry about the background, it's set to randomly change and that's what was there at the time)

So that was a "normal" flat app that, as I drag it across to the secondary display, rotates to an angled version of itself and refuses to land on the screen. The cursor was also on the screen at the time, but disappeared during the screen capture. When I release the mouse button, that app snaps back to the MacBook display.

So, is this what everyone who is helping thought I meant? It is difficult to explain.

Thanks.

Hi,

Yes the skyline is the wallpaper (at that time). The Circled icon is showing you what is changes to as it crosses over onto the external display. It can be freely dragged around on the screen but as soon as I release the mouse button it snaps back to the originating screen (the MacBook) and resumes it's normal shape.

These are the View settings.

Thanks for the reply. I've had a look through the various settings for both of these and I am at a loss as to what ones are causing this behaviour.

For example, with the mouse/trackpad, all I am doing is dragging the app across, how would that cause the behaviour I discussed.

With Mission Control, again I can't see any settings that I would change that would stop it. I actually don't use MC, so I might just turn off all switches and see if that helps.

Maybe I'll just have to learn to put up with it.

Thanks again tho :)

Hi,

Sorry, not sure what you're actually asking me there. The only thing I really use (& a lot) is the one that has multiple screens across the top and I can scroll vertically across them. I'm not sure what that one is called, Apple has so many names for things.

I'm not sure if that is what is causing this problem. I do know that sometimes, scrolling to a different screen before I drag the app across will fix the issue, but not every time.
