Retrieving passwords on Pages
What good does a hint do if it's not showing when I try to open a Pages document? Is there really no way to just change the password without trying to open the document with the forgotten password?

Nope. You must apply the password to open the document. On the third guess, the password hint will be shown.
When you set a password and hint on a Pages document with Pages for iOS/iPadOS the last step on that password panel is a slider to Remember this password. If you set that, then you don't have to remember the password or the hint because Pages will automatically retrieve that password from the iOS/iPadOS keychain and unlock your document. As long as the document remains on your iOS/iPadOS device.
